About Cairngorm Mountain

With 11 lifts giving access to 38 runs this is a fairly big ski area in Scottish terms. The lift system is well developed and the mountain offers something for everyone. The mountain operator has recently invested in snow making equipment to enhance the somewhat erratic natural falls. The funicular has a huge carrying capacity taking just 4 mins to gain 1500 vertical height to over 3500ft, just under the summit. The beauty of this is there is a great high plateau with a few runs suitable for beginners when weather permits. The Ptarmigan cafe and bar ( AKA 1097), high on the plateau is a safe haven providing fabulous views.

The classic intermediate runs of the Coire Cas area can be accessed from here with the Coire Cas usually holding the best snow on the mountain, the steeper, lower section ‘Gun Barrel’ can be avoided via the ZigZags but great fun for a decent intermediate and above.

For the more adventurous head over to the East and West Walls down the ‘Ciste’ side. Not so well served by lifts but in good snow you can follow the gulley right to the car park where a shuttle bus will bring you back to the ‘Cas’ side. A long steepish poma runs from ¾ down also. A short hike up to the plateau provides good access to some exciting steeps - The Head and Coronations Walls - check conditions and take advice before going off piste

The town of Aviemore feels the most like a resort village in Scotland, 9 miles from the ski station There is a good selection of restaurants, bars and nightlife. Personal favourites are the Skiing Do ( and Do Below) for 80’s skiing kitch and memorabilia and the Mountain Cafe for replenishing lost calories or contemplating going up the hill!

For a more quaint or traditional stay try Grantown on Spey, Carrbridge or Kingussie
